- Store pet food in tightly sealed containers.
- Put away pet food and water at night.
- Seal areas where pests can hide, including caulking cracks and crevices around cabinets or baseboards.
- Fill spaces around pipes with steel wool to rodent proof.
- Cover holes around the home such as vents with wire mesh to rodent proof.
- Before bringing any furniture or packages into your home, check for pests that may have hitched a ride along the way.
Outdoors
- Trim trees away from the home or structure to remove rat and rodent pathway.
- Do not leave debris piles on the property, as they are havens for rodents, black widows, and other pests.
- Remove mulch or bark away from foundation.
- Remove fruit from ground that falls from fruit trees, or remove the fruit tree altogether as it attracts pests.
- To prevent flies and other attracted pests, regularly clean up dog and cat waste, and clean hard surfaces with soap and water.
- Fix water leaks and broken pipes (e.g. sprinklers, drain pipes, etc.).
- Keep gutters and downspouts clear of debris to prevent water from building.
- Remove standing water as it attracts mosquitoes that can spread dangerous illness, as well as wasps.
- Install yellow or sodium vapor light bulbs, as they attract fewer flying insects.
- Seal cracks in property to remove entry points for ants, spiders, roaches, rodents, and other pests.
- Properly seal and weather strip windows, doors, and screens.
- Keep firewood stacks as far away from the home or structure as possible, and if it is possible keep it away from the ground.
- Keep trash in closed containers.
- Put away pet food and water at night.
- Do not store pet food outside.
